Stabilization of Mill Store Structure Underway

During early July, stabilization of the stone walls of the small building situated in front of the Mill structure commenced. This building had multiple uses during its lifetime, including that of a store and post office. The work is being done by Cresthill Stoneworks of Orleans, Virginia.

The section of the building most in need of stabilization is the appendage at the rear of the structure. Cracks are in evidence at the point where the addition joins to the main massing of the structure and within wall surfaces themselves.

Corner Crack Where Building Sections Meet

In the excavation of the foundation area of this section of the building, along with exploratory removal of small sections of stone from the wall, Cresthill determined that the construction techniques incorporated in this portion of the structure were not as robust. The rear corner of the building was resting on the edge of a foundation stone in lieu of a formal footing structure. Additionally, there was a lack of mortar within the wall structure close to the area of one of the wall cracks.

Remediation of these problems will consist of pouring "add-on" cement footings to supplement the existing subterranean stones and injection of Portland cement within the sidewall holes to stabilize those locales.

Loose and missing stones in the exterior cellar entrance walls and steps have been repaired and associated mortar has been re-pointed.
