Phase I Stabilization Complete

Turn The Mill Around Campaign (TTMAC) has made great progress this year with the completion of Phase I of the Beverley Mill Stabilization Project. Using the $300,000 Virginia Department of Transportation TEA 21 grant awarded to Turn The Mill Around Campaign in 1999, TTMAC has concentrated its efforts on this first phase, which includes the south facade, the southeast and southwest corners and all the window and door openings throughout the mill building.

After extensive examination of the building, it was determined the south façade needed immediate attention due to its critical condition. This is also the largest side of the mill building, with the most openings (20 total). The first order of business by the preservation team of Cintec America, Inc. and Conservation Solutions, was the erection of scaffolding on the interior and exterior of the south wall. Many of you may have seen the ghostly image of the mill's south wall cloaked in white fabric from top to bottom.

The installation of the internal anchoring system then took place in selected areas of the south façade. This required drilling through areas of the stone, inserting a stainless steel rod encased with a fabric sleeve which was then inflated with grout and left to cure, conforming to the topography of the stone. The finished product provides structural support to the wall without the encumbrance of external supports. A limited amount of external steel will be added in the final phase of stabilization.

Due to limited funds available, the decision was made to temporarily shore up all the window and door openings to provide some stability during the interim of raising more funds. This was accomplished through the expertise of Standard Restoration and Waterproofing. Each opening had to be carefully shored using metal jacks, strategically placed, to fit each unique scenario.

Finally, to top it off, all upward facing stone surfaces, such as ledges and windowsills, were capped with lead sheeting to prevent further water damage. The tops of all four walls were also capped with lead.

As funding becomes available, TTMAC is anxious to begin Phase II which will complete the stabilization of the mill building at an estimated cost of $500,000. Funding is being sought from the private sector, foundations and corporations.

Mill Hosts Local Groups for Site Tours

Turn The Mill Around Campaign has had the pleasure of hosting several local history and millrelated groups this fall. In September, a Civil War Tour focusing on the Second Battle of Manassas, sponsored by the Friends of Manassas National Battlefield Park, was lead by expert Civil War historian, Ed Bearrs. Ed, whose flamboyant style and attention to detail, relates many personal stories of the soldiers involved in the conflict, bringing out their unique personalities. Participants of the tour learned the history of the Beverley Mill and its role in the Battle of Thoroughfare Gap.

In October, Turn The Mill Around Campaign hosted TIMS-America (The International Molinological Society, American Chapter). The members of this organization are dedicated mill enthusiasts who travel throughout this country and some throughout the world, touring mills of all types. Many of the mill sites visited are privately owned, which provides a rare glimpse and unique opportunity to explore our nation's milling history, which is rapidly disappearing. TIMS-America enjoyed a picnic lunch adjacent to the Beverley Mill after a brief explanation by TTMAC Executive Director, Eileen Vroom, on the stabilization... TTMAC would like to remind our readers that the mill site is closed to the public, but guided tours are available. Call the mill office at (703) 753- 3273 for more information.
