Insertion of Corner Anchors to Start

Corner anchors and the associated material that will allow their emplacement has arrived on the mill site. Minor final drilling work remained on the corners as of May 30th. Insertion of the anchors will commence immediately thereafter during the week.

The anchors arrived "pre-assembled" in their mesh covering which included a plastic tube at the end of the assembly into which the mortar mix is pumped under pressure. These were delivered in various lengths determined by the locations in the structure in which they are to be inserted. After insertion, the mortar injection process begins.

The mortar then begins to fill the mesh covering at the opposite end and works its way to the front. As it does this, the mesh allows significant flexibility in allowing the mortar to follow the contour of any voids in the drilled rock. In this manner, once cured and expanded, the mortar firmly holds the stainless steel anchor in place affording structural rigidity to that portion of the wall. A special mortar is formulated by Cintec expressly for this purpose.

As the stabilization work progressed, a second construction project was well underway this week at the site. A group of volunteers were erecting a sign displaying the name of the website for the benefit of passengers in vehicles passing by on Interstate 66. It is hoped that the sign will entice travelers on I-66 who may be curious about the work going on at the mill to visit the Chapman's Mill website in an effort to raise additional funds.

Additional funds raised in the general time frame after the erection of the sign will be used primarily to support reconstruction of the gable ends of the mill building.
